Smoking is a controversial habit and
topic. Governments have been warning their people for decades about the
dangers of smoking to themselves and the people around them, also known
as 'passive smokers'. In developed countries, smoking is banned in many public places, including bars, restaurants and public buildings. Understandably, you are not allowed to smoke in aeroplanes or trains because of both health and safety concerns. It has become socially unacceptable to smoke at dinner parties, almost as unacceptable as drinking and driving. And yet, the number of people smoking around the world appears to be on the rise, especially in the Far East. There are special rooms and cubicles in airports to allow smokers to smoke without impacting the people around them. In offices, there are often designated smoking rooms. Smokers continue to smoke and alternatives to traditional cigarettes have appeared on the market to allow people to smoke in an unobtrusive way. The most notable development for smokers is the 'electronic' or 'smokeless' cigarette. Smokeless, electronic or e-cigarettes simulate smoking tobacco based cigarettes by way of a mist which is created when the smoker inhales through a device which looks like a normal cigarette. The mist gives the same sensation of smoking a traditional cigarette by way the feeling, look, flavour and the nicotine of tobacco smoke. However, it gives none of the odour and they have none of the tar and other damaging chemicals which are contained in tobacco smoke. Electronic cigarettes can look like a normal tobacco cigarette although they vary in size and design which is, often, down to the size of the batteries in them. Some are even designed to look like pipes and cigars. You can buy reusable smokeless cigarettes which can be refilled. Others are disposable. Electronic cigarettes were designed as an alternative to smoking tobacco based cigarettes. The aim was to deliver the experience of tobacco smoking but without, or diminished health effects, of the 'normal' cigarette. |
